In a stunning upset, Gilas Pilipinas made history by defeating Latvia 89-80 on their home turf in Riga, marking their first victory over a European opponent in an official FIBA competition since 1960. The Philippine team, fueled by standout performances and strategic gameplay, clinched the win during their opening match at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Justin Brownlee, in his debut against a European team, delivered a near triple-double with 26 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. His pivotal four-point play in the final minutes solidified Gilas' lead, thwarting Latvia's comeback attempts. Kai Sotto also showcased his prowess with 18 points and eight rebounds, shooting an impressive 70% from the field. June Mar Fajardo and Chris Newsome contributed significantly, with Fajardo adding 11 points efficiently.

Gilas Pilipinas dominated from the outset, surprising Latvia with a commanding 32-16 lead after the first quarter. Despite Latvia's efforts to narrow the gap in the fourth quarter, timely plays from Gilas kept them at bay.

Head coach Tim Cone expressed his astonishment and pride in the team's achievement, emphasizing the significance of international success for Filipino basketball. The team's offensive efficiency was evident, shooting 72% in the opening period, including nine three-pointers and near-perfect free throw shooting.

"This is a huge feather in the cap," remarked Cone during the post-game press conference. "Our country is passionate about basketball, and this success means a lot back home."

With this victory, Gilas Pilipinas secures the top seed in their group and eyes a spot in the tournament finals. They will face Georgia next, aiming to continue their winning momentum and advance further in the tournament.

Latvia, despite the setback, remains in contention for the semifinals. Gilas Pilipinas' next game against Georgia will determine their path forward, with even a narrow loss keeping their semifinal hopes alive.
