The government is moving quickly to help over 80,000 residents affected by the sudden eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. shared in a recent update.

He reassured the public that the government is fully prepared to address the needs of families forced to evacuate after the eruption. “We’re ready. We know what to do,” he said, emphasizing that food packs and other essential supplies have already been sent to evacuation centers.

Leading the relief efforts is Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian, who personally traveled to Negros Island to oversee operations. The President also mentioned that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) confirmed there are sufficient funds to sustain support for displaced residents.

"We are ready to support the families who have been evacuated outside the six-kilometer danger zone," Marcos reiterated, as families temporarily settle into shelters away from harm.

Meanwhile, government agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), are closely monitoring air quality in the area. Marcos explained this step is critical to deciding if further evacuations will be necessary, especially if toxic gases continue to pose risks to nearby communities.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that Mt. Kanlaon erupted at around 3:03 p.m. on Monday, producing a massive plume that shot 3,000 meters into the sky. The sudden activity prompted Phivolcs to raise the alert status from Level 2 (increasing unrest) to Level 3 (magmatic unrest), meaning the eruption has started and could potentially escalate into more explosive activity.

With communities now evacuated and the situation being closely watched, government teams are working on ensuring families receive the immediate support they need. Relief operations are expected to continue as authorities assess the long-term impact of Mt. Kanlaon’s latest eruption.
