Heads Up, Palawan And Basilan! China's Long March 8A Rocket Launch Could Drop Debris Today
PCG FILE
Palawan and Basilan are on high alert today as China’s Long March 8A rocket is finally set to launch from Hainan after a delay from its original January 25 schedule. The launch window? Sometime between 9:22 AM and 10:16 AM—so if you’re in the area, now’s the time to stay alert.

What’s the Big Deal?

While space launches are always exciting, this one comes with a catch: rocket debris could end up falling in Philippine waters. The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has mapped out three potential drop zones, and here’s where they are:
• Drop Zone 1: About 85 nautical miles from Rozul Reef
• Drop Zone 2: 40 nautical miles off Puerto Princesa, Palawan
• Drop Zone 3: Just 33 nautical miles from Hadji Muhtamad, Basilan

To keep everyone safe, authorities are imposing temporary restrictions in these areas. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and local government units are all on standby, ready to issue warnings to mariners and coastal communities.

What Should You Do?

• DO NOT approach or touch any suspicious debris. The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) warns that rocket fragments could contain toxic materials. If you see anything unusual, report it immediately to the authorities.
• Fishermen and boaters should steer clear of the identified drop zones to avoid any unexpected hazards.
As the rocket takes off today, all eyes are on the sky—and the sea. Stay safe, and let’s hope the only thing we get from this launch is a good view, not falling space junk!
