In a fiery budget briefing held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, Sen. Risa Hontiveros didn’t hold back as she questioned the Department of Justice (DOJ) on their efforts to track down those responsible for helping dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo flee the country.

Hontiveros pointed out that Guo, along with her two siblings, reportedly paid a hefty bribe—allegedly around P200 million—to slip through the cracks of the Bureau of Immigration and other law enforcement agencies undetected. "Ang ulat ay P200 million ang binayad o ginastos ng Guo family para lang patakasin sila Alice," the senator emphasized during the discussion.

Her concerns came to light during the budget briefing for the proposed P40.585-billion budget of the DOJ. Hontiveros wasn’t just asking about the budget; she wanted answers on how the DOJ plans to hold those who facilitated this escape accountable.

DOJ Undersecretary Nicholas Ty assured the senator that they’re already on it. He shared that the DOJ is working closely with agencies like the National Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Immigration to kickstart the investigation. "We are coordinating with the relevant agencies to ensure that the investigation will begin soon," Ty said in response.
