Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a true advocate for peace, quietly passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, Eastern Standard Time (EST), at his cherished home in Plains, Georgia. Surrounded by his family, Carter left this world at the age of 100, holding the title of the longest-lived U.S. president.

Known not just for his time in the Oval Office but for a lifetime of humanitarian efforts, President Carter’s legacy is a beacon of hope and service. His son, Chip Carter, reflected on the magnitude of his father’s influence:

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

Carter’s extraordinary life was filled with milestones. From steering the nation through challenging times to earning the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his dedication to human rights and conflict resolution, he remained a symbol of integrity and compassion.

He is survived by his children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. His beloved wife, Rosalynn, with whom he shared over seven decades of marriage, and one grandchild preceded him in death.

Public observances will honor President Carter in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., before his private interment in Plains, Georgia. Details of his state funeral, including motorcade routes and events, will soon be shared by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region.

To pay tribute, the Carter family invites the public to visit Jimmy Carter’s official tribute website, where an online condolence book and a wealth of biographical materials celebrate his extraordinary journey.

In place of flowers, the family requests donations to The Carter Center, continuing the mission that was so close to his heart. Contributions can be sent to 453 John Lewis Freedom Parkway N.E., Atlanta, GA 30307.

As we bid farewell to a leader who exemplified humility and service, we’re reminded of his timeless message: “The best way to honor someone’s memory is to live by their values.”
