In a heartwarming turn of events, former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog has been granted executive clemency, closing a chapter of challenges and controversy in his public service career.

A Legacy of Public Service

Mabilog’s journey in public service started young. During his college years, he served as chairman of the Kabataang Barangay in Tap-oc, Molo, Iloilo City. By 2004, he secured a councilor seat in Iloilo City, and just a few years later, in 2007, he was elected Vice Mayor. His political career peaked in 2010 when he became Mayor of Iloilo City, serving for three terms until 2017. Under his leadership, the city flourished, earning recognition for its livability and development.

A Dark Chapter

However, Mabilog’s career took a sharp turn in 2016 when then-President Rodrigo Duterte publicly accused him of being a “major drug protector.” This accusation placed him under the spotlight, with allegations eventually leading to a dismissal order in 2017. The Office of the Ombudsman found him guilty of Serious Dishonesty for failing to explain an increase of nearly ₱9 million in his wealth. The charges stemmed from a complaint filed as early as 2013.

Despite the controversy, Mabilog’s supporters never wavered, praising his dedication to good governance and his efforts to transform Iloilo City.

A Fresh Start

In a resolution issued by the Office of the President, Mabilog’s appeal for executive clemency was granted. The decision was based on his long-standing commitment to good governance and the numerous accolades Iloilo City received under his leadership.
Congresswoman Jam Baronda shared the joyful news in a heartfelt social media post, saying:

"We thank God for granting executive clemency to former Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog. The prayers of thousands, who have witnessed how he has given it all for Iloilo City as our city mayor and how he has loved the Ilonggos, have been heard. Justice is served."

Baronda also recounted the emotional moment when Mabilog’s wife, Marivic, read the letter from the Office of the President, sharing the family’s gratitude for the strength and support they received throughout this ordeal.

Looking Ahead

This resolution not only clears Mabilog’s name but also offers him a chance to rebuild and contribute to society once again. For the Ilonggos who stood by their former mayor, this marks a victory for justice and a new beginning for one of Iloilo’s most dedicated leaders.

As Iloilo City continues to thrive, the story of Jed Patrick Mabilog serves as a reminder of resilience, faith, and the enduring power of community support.
