Kanlaon Volcano Erupts: Alert Level Raised To 3; Work Suspended In Canlaon City
Screengrab from PHIVOLCS-DOST
Kanlaon Volcano made its presence felt this afternoon, December 9, 2024, with a sudden explosive eruption at 3:03 PM, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to raise the Alert Level from 2 to 3.

The eruption was no small event—it sent a massive ash plume soaring 3,000 meters into the sky, drifting west-southwest, while pyroclastic density currents (PDCs)—those dangerous, fast-moving clouds of gas and volcanic debris—rolled down the southeastern slopes of the volcano.

What Does Alert Level 3 Mean?

PHIVOLCS explains that Alert Level 3 indicates "magmatic unrest," meaning magma is moving to the surface and has already caused an eruption. If conditions worsen, this could escalate to even more explosive eruptions.

Evacuations Ordered and Work Suspended

In response, Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco B. Cardenas took swift action. All local government units are now enforcing evacuations within a 6-kilometer radius of the summit, and residents near the volcano are advised to prepare for additional evacuations if needed.

As a safety precaution, the mayor has suspended work in all government offices in Canlaon City effective immediately. Essential services like disaster response, healthcare, and emergency assistance will continue, while private-sector work suspensions are left to the discretion of management.

Mayor Cardenas also reminded all local disaster risk reduction councils, barangay officials, and government personnel to follow safety protocols and stay updated with directives from PHIVOLCS and local authorities.

Stay Safe and Alert

For residents near Kanlaon, this is the time to remain vigilant. PHIVOLCS continues to monitor the situation, and authorities urge everyone to stay tuned for updates. Avoid venturing near the danger zone and ensure evacuation plans are ready.

Kanlaon Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, has proven unpredictable in the past, so this alert serves as a timely reminder: when it comes to nature's power, preparedness is key.
