Keeping Watch: BRP Cabra's Tireless Vigil Over Chinese Coast Guard 'Monster Ship'

In the vast waters off Zambales, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel BRP Cabra is not taking its eyes off the prize—maintaining a vigilant watch over the Chinese Coast Guard’s (CCG) imposing vessel 5901. On its second day of patrol, BRP Cabra is steadfast, keeping a close eye on every move of what has been dubbed the "monster ship."

The tension is palpable, with the PCG standing firm against what it views as the CCG's unwarranted presence in the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The PCG has issued a clear radio challenge, asserting that the CCG has no legal authority to operate in these waters. In response, the Chinese vessel claims to be carrying out law enforcement duties within what it considers its jurisdiction. It’s a classic case of conflicting narratives, but the BRP Cabra remains resolute.

Backing up the patrol efforts, Commandant Admiral Ronniel Gil Gavan has deployed the PCG Islander aircraft. This eye in the sky is there to capture every detail, documenting any incident, and standing by to ensure swift rescue operations should things escalate—like if there’s an intentional ramming incident.

Despite the tension, the PCG’s mission is clear: uphold a peace-oriented, rules-based approach while protecting the sovereign rights of the Philippines. The leadership's commitment is unshakable, and they’ll keep the pressure on until the Chinese vessel backs down.

Above all, the safety of Filipino fishermen is top of mind. For the BRP Cabra and the rest of the PCG, ensuring the security of their fellow countrymen is the ultimate goal, even amidst the choppy waters of international maritime disputes.
