Lala Sotto Responds To Senator Estrada's Criticism Of VMX: 'We Need To Protect Viewers, Especially Children'

MTRCB Chair Lala Sotto didn’t hold back after Senator Jinggoy Estrada called out VMX (formerly Vivamax) for allegedly streaming pornographic content. Sotto made it clear that while the agency understands Estrada’s concerns, their current powers are limited.

“Right now, online curated content doesn’t fall under MTRCB’s mandate,” Sotto explained. “But this is exactly why we’re grateful to the Senate for supporting amendments to the MTRCB charter—so we can expand our scope and address these kinds of issues.”

Estrada’s concerns are valid, Sotto admitted, especially when it comes to protecting children in this digital age. She assured the public that the MTRCB is already taking proactive steps, such as engaging with subscription-based platforms and urging them to observe content standards.

Sotto added, “Rest assured, the MTRCB is doing its best despite the current limitations of our powers under PD 1986.”

It’s a reminder that while the MTRCB is ready to take on bigger responsibilities, it will take legislative updates to give them the teeth to truly monitor content in the streaming era. For now, the ball is in Congress’ court.
