Malayang Konsyumer: Data Breaches Pose Threat To Consumer Privacy and Digital Integrity

Recent cyberattacks against major corporations Maxicare, Toyota, and Robinsons Land have raised significant concerns over data privacy and digital security in the Philippines. On June 16, these companies experienced severe breaches that compromised consumer information, potentially leading to illicit data sales.

Malayang Konsyumer Spokesperson Atty. Simoun Montelibo Salinas said this breach not only violates the Data Privacy Act of 2012 but also underscores growing threats to digital integrity and consumer privacy nationwide.

“The breaches come amidst a series of attacks on government databases since the beginning of 2024, indicating an escalation in cybercriminal sophistication. This trend highlights urgent challenges in safeguarding sensitive consumer data from increasingly advanced cyber threats,” Salinas said.

His group also called for immediate action urging stakeholders to report to the Department of Justice and the National Bureau of Investigation to swiftly apprehend perpetrators.

“Additionally, there are appeals to the National Privacy Commission and the Department of Information and Communication Technology to bolster data protection measures. Strengthening these defenses is crucial to prevent further compromises and uphold consumer trust in digital platforms,” he added.
