President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. had a heartfelt moment of gratitude as he acknowledged the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) significant contributions to the Philippines, especially during the tough days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the Malacañan Palace on Thursday, where he welcomed outgoing ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa for a farewell call, Marcos expressed deep appreciation for the institution’s unwavering support.

“I have to always thank you for the involvement of ADB. The partnership of ADB and the Philippines has certainly grown to a great deal,” President Marcos shared, emphasizing how vital ADB’s assistance was during the pandemic. “That was critical. That was absolutely critical for our recovery. Without your help, it would have been a much more difficult situation for us,” he added.

The President highlighted ADB’s consistent role in spearheading foreign-assisted projects in the country and expressed his intent to strengthen this long-standing partnership further. “We fully intend to increase that engagement and continue to make them stronger. Again, thank you for all the help,” he said.

In honor of Asakawa’s remarkable leadership and dedication to supporting the Philippines, President Marcos conferred upon him the Order of Sikatuna with the rank of Datu (Grand Cross) Gold Distinction. This prestigious award celebrates Asakawa’s role in deepening ADB’s relationship with the Philippines, especially in critical areas such as economic development, health, climate resilience, and infrastructure investment.

Asakawa, who has been ADB President since January 2020, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to meet with President Marcos before concluding his tenure.

The meeting underscored the strong bond between the Philippines and ADB—a partnership that has proved essential in navigating challenges and building a brighter future for the Filipino people.
