Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro Faces Setback: COMELEC Cancels Candidacy For Congressman

Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro just hit a major political roadblock. The First Division of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has officially approved the petition to cancel his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for congressman of Marikina's 1st District in the 2025 elections.

Why Was Marcy’s Candidacy Challenged?

The petition was led by Senator Koko Pimentel, along with other concerned residents of Marikina's 1st District. They alleged that Mayor Teodoro committed *material misrepresentation* when he filed his COC, particularly regarding his residency status.

To break it down, under the Omnibus Election Code, candidates are required to provide accurate information about their qualifications, including residency. According to Pimentel and his group, Mayor Teodoro’s claims about living in the 1st District didn’t add up, which led to their formal request to cancel his candidacy.

How It All Unfolded

On October 5, 2024, Mayor Teodoro submitted his COC as the official candidate of the National Unity Party (NUP) for the position of congressman in Marikina's 1st District. However, it wasn’t long before petitions started pouring in.

The first petition was filed on October 26, 2024, by Leighrich James Estanislao, a registered voter in Marikina. Just days later, on October 29, 2024, Senator Koko Pimentel, along with Katrina Mari Faye Marco, Angelu Estanislao, and Ma. Luisa De Guzman—all residents of the 1st District—filed a similar petition. They argued that Teodoro’s COC should be canceled due to false claims.

COMELEC’s Decision

After reviewing the petitions and the evidence presented, the First Division of COMELEC decided to side with the petitioners. The ruling emphasized that material misrepresentation, especially concerning residency, is a serious matter under the law. This ultimately led to the cancellation of Mayor Teodoro’s candidacy.

What’s Next for Mayor Teodoro?

Mayor Marcy Teodoro, who has been a prominent figure in Marikina politics, is expected to appeal this decision. He still has options to bring the case to the COMELEC en banc (full commission) or potentially to the Supreme Court. For now, though, this decision is a major shake-up in Marikina’s political scene as the 2025 elections approach.

Will Mayor Teodoro bounce back, or will this be the end of his congressional run? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure—Marikina politics just got a lot more interesting.
