PBA FILES
In a thrilling showdown at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday night, the Meralco Bolts made a resounding statement, clinching a pivotal Game One victory against the San Miguel Beermen in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals. The Bolts displayed a stellar collective effort, outplaying their opponents with a gutsy 93-86 triumph.

The Bolts' big men faced a formidable challenge in the paint against June Mar Fajardo, but they stood tall, holding their ground. Meanwhile, the guards showcased their prowess with exceptional outside shooting and efficient conversions on fastbreaks, driving Meralco towards a remarkable victory reminiscent of their earlier 95-92 win over San Miguel Beer during the elimination round.

This victory marked the second time in the tournament that the Bolts halted the Beermen's formidable winning streak, granting them a crucial 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven championship series.

Reflecting on the game, Bolts coach Luigi Trillo attributed their success to a superb performance in the second half. "They beat us in a lot of categories in the first half, then we came out in the second half and were able to execute the game plan that we wanted," Trillo remarked, emphasizing the team's collective effort on both ends of the court.

Leading the scoring parade for Meralco were Chris Newsome and Chris Banchero, each contributing 18 points, followed closely by Bong Quinto and Allein Maliksi with 15 points apiece. Additionally, Cliff Hodge made a significant impact with 15 rebounds and seven points.

Raymond Almazan spearheaded the defensive effort against Fajardo, while Brandon Bates, Kyle Pascual, and Norbert Torres also played crucial roles in containing the Beermen's formidable big man.

Despite facing a barrage of defensive schemes, Fajardo showcased his dominance with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. CJ Perez and Marcio Lassiter provided additional firepower for San Miguel Beer with 20 and 16 points, respectively.

Notably absent from the game was Terrence Romeo, further highlighting the challenges faced by the Beermen in their quest for victory.

As the series progresses, both teams remain focused and determined, with Game One serving as a reminder that every game counts in the pursuit of the championship title.
