After seven long seasons of blood, sweat, and endless hustle, Michele Gumabao has finally reached the pinnacle of her Premier Volleyball League career. The 5-foot-9 opposite spiker, known for her explosive plays and consistent performances, snagged the coveted 2024 Invitational Conference Most Valuable Player award. And honestly? It was about time!

Gumabao, who’s been acting as Creamline’s interim captain for the past two conferences, truly proved she’s not just a leader but a powerhouse on the court. This season, she piled up 59 points—52 of which came from her devastating attacks, along with four aces and three solid blocks. Her efficiency speaks for itself, boasting a 37.96 percent success rate, landing her second in the league. But she didn’t stop there—Gumabao also ranked fourth in service, with an average of 0.29 aces per set.

And what’s even more impressive? She helped lead her team, the Cool Smashers, to an Invitational championship victory, completing the first-ever Grand Slam in the league’s history. That’s some history-making right there!

While the Invitational Conference featured both local and foreign players, this season didn’t have an award for Best Foreign Guest Player. However, foreign stars still made their mark. Cignal’s MJ Perez, a force to be reckoned with, and Creamline’s Erica Staunton, Gumabao’s teammate, were named the Best Outside Spikers.

Perez, hailing from Venezuela, dominated the league with 115 points and 35.02 percent attack efficiency, while Staunton put up 61 points with a 36.24 percent success rate. These two were definitely the dynamic duo to watch.

On the other hand, Jackie Acuña of Cignal and Low Mei Cing, aka Maggie, from the Japanese guest team Kurashiki, earned the titles of Best Middle Blockers. Maggie, a Malaysian-Taiwanese standout, was a blocking machine, racking up nine blocks—the highest in the league—and finishing third overall in scoring.

Kurashiki’s Saya Taniguchi took home the Best Opposite Spiker award, with 51 points and a solid 34.48 percent efficiency. Meanwhile, Creamline’s Kyle Negrito grabbed her second Best Setter award in just three conferences. Not only did she average 5.29 excellent sets per frame, but she also led the league in aces, racking up 12 for a stunning 0.86 per set.

And let’s not forget Thai guest team Est Cola’s Kalyarat Khamwong, who earned the Best Libero title after finishing fifth in digging and landing in the Top 10 for receptions.

But this season truly belonged to Gumabao. Her MVP win not only highlights her individual excellence but also marks her evolution as one of the league’s brightest stars.
