NAIA 2.0: How NNIC Is Transforming The Philippines' Busiest Airport In Just 60 Days

It’s only been two months since New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) took over operations at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), and the improvements are already making waves. From smoother passenger flows to upgraded facilities, the operator is working hard to bring the aging airport into the modern era.

NNIC officially began managing NAIA on September 14, 2024, with big goals: easing congestion, enhancing the passenger experience, and ensuring that facilities work reliably. And in just 60 days, the team is already delivering results.

What’s New at NAIA?

Here’s a quick look at the changes you might notice next time you fly:

A Faster, Smarter NAIA

Internet speeds are now 10x better, with free Wi-Fi up to 115 Mbps in peak hours (and no personal info required).

Boarding bridges are back in action, with six designed for wide-body planes reopened and new “swing gates” accommodating both domestic and international flights.

Parking and Traffic Woes? Handled.

About 1,800 parking slots have been freed up to ease traffic flow.

Major curbside expansions are happening across terminals. For instance, Terminal 1’s curbside will grow from 3 lanes to 8.

OFWs Get VIP Treatment

A new Overseas Filipino Workers’ lounge at Terminal 3 now offers free Wi-Fi, snacks, and comfy seating—a welcome touch for our modern heroes.

Power Security Means No More Blackouts

NNIC partnered with Meralco to set up a 115KV substation for stable electricity.

A new 6.12 MW uninterruptible power supply (UPS) ensures critical systems like airfield lights stay on, no matter what.

The Big Picture

While the changes are already visible, NNIC President Ramon S. Ang acknowledges there’s no quick fix for a 76-year-old airport that’s long been operating beyond its capacity. NAIA was built for 35 million passengers annually but is handling over 50 million this year—a staggering overload.

“There’s no magic wand to solve decades of issues overnight,” Ang explained. “But we’re moving as fast as we can to address immediate concerns while laying the groundwork for long-term upgrades.”

A Win for Everyone

It’s not just about shiny new terminals or faster Wi-Fi. NNIC is also prioritizing government partnerships and employee welfare:

A massive upfront payment of Php 30 billion to the government has already been made.

Employees received Php 420 million in bonuses and transition support.

What’s Next?

Big things are on the horizon for 2025:

New terminal assignments to reduce congestion, with Terminal 3 focusing on international flights.

Installation of cutting-edge explosive detection systems.

Expanded road networks for easier access to NAIA.

For passengers, the message is clear: NAIA is evolving, and the improvements are just getting started. If this is what NNIC can achieve in two months, travelers can expect even more exciting changes ahead.
