Following the devastation of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine in late October 2024, the town of Milaor in Camarines Sur found itself grappling with extensive flooding. With water levels ranging from ankle-deep in some areas to above waist height in others, many families and their pets were stranded, facing an uncertain wait for assistance.

Stepping in to support those affected, a disaster response team from the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), led by Executive Director Anna Cabrera, joined forces with One Meralco Foundation to bring some much-needed relief. On October 30, they embarked on a mission to help not only families but also their four-legged companions, knowing that in times of crisis, pets are often overlooked in the rush to provide aid.

With support from Meralco’s Animal Welfare Advocacy, the PAWS team made their way to areas where animals were trapped—some on rooftops, others in isolated spots cut off by floodwater. They distributed dog food and other supplies for these pets, ensuring they too were cared for amid the crisis.

But the operation went beyond helping animals. Working closely with One Meralco Foundation, PAWS identified families in the greatest need and distributed relief packs to assist them as they navigated the aftermath of the flooding. For both organizations, this effort was about showing a commitment to holistic support, addressing the well-being of both people and animals alike.

In a time of overwhelming hardship for Milaor residents, PAWS and One Meralco Foundation’s coordinated response demonstrated the power of compassion and collaboration, offering a glimmer of hope to families and their loyal pets as they work to rebuild their lives.
