The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has already made a game-winning move even before the highly anticipated Governors' Cup finals between Barangay Ginebra and TNT kicks off. The league's Board announced that the entire earnings from Game 1 of the finals will be donated to support those affected by Tropical Storm Kristine. The finals opener is set for this Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, and it’s already shaping up to be more than just a battle on the court.

PBA Board Chairman Ricky Vargas and Vice Chairman Alfrancis Chua made the heartwarming announcement during a press conference at Enderun Colleges in Taguig on Thursday, where they revealed that this decision came from a deep sense of duty to help those impacted by the storm.

"Nag-usap kami nila commissioner and chairman, and we decided that yung proceeds for Sunday's game, ido-donate natin lahat sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo," said Chua, who also serves as the sports director of San Miguel Corporation and the governor of Barangay Ginebra. "You can see what happened sa bansa natin, yung mga kababayan natin nasalanta. Ngayon, nandito tayo preparing for Sunday's game, and them, they're preparing there kung may matitirhan pa sila or may makakain pa."

The PBA’s move comes as Luzon reels from the aftermath of Tropical Storm Kristine, which brought torrential rains and massive flooding across several provinces, with the Bicol and Ilocos regions among the hardest hit.

Vargas explained that all proceeds from the game will be channeled through Alagang Kapatid Foundation Inc., TV5 Network's corporate social responsibility arm, which will be tasked with ensuring that the funds reach those who need it most. "Yung ibibigay ng PBA para sa mga nasalanta ng baha, we will entrust it to Alagang Kapatid of TV5. Kilala nyo naman ang Alagang Kapatid. And they will report how they used the proceeds that were given to them by the PBA," he said.

Chua also took the opportunity to call on other groups and individuals to join the league’s effort to aid the calamity victims. "Ipagdasal natin sila, at kung meron pang ibang gustong tumulong, nananawagan ako na sana tulungan natin ang ating mga kapatid."

The PBA isn’t stopping with just Sunday's game. Commissioner Willie Marcial hinted that the league is considering additional relief efforts for other storm-affected areas, including Batangas, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and regions in Visayas.

The Governors' Cup finals may be the pinnacle of the basketball season, but with this act of generosity, the PBA is showing that the true spirit of the game extends beyond the hardwood. As the players prepare for the showdown on the court, the league has already made a meaningful assist for those facing a much tougher fight off the court.
