PCG Reminds Divers: Safety First After Tragic Isla Verde Incident

Diving is an exciting and breathtaking experience, but as the recent tragedy in Isla Verde reminds us, safety should always come first. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is urging divers and dive operators to take extra precautions, especially in areas known for strong currents and diverse marine life.

A Dive Gone Wrong

On February 27, 2025, what was supposed to be an unforgettable underwater adventure turned into a nightmare. A group of foreign divers set out from Puerto Galera for a dive at Pulong Bato, Isla Verde. But just 30 minutes into their second dive, powerful underwater currents separated the group.

Three divers, including a Dive Master and an 18-year-old, managed to make it back safely. Tragically, two Russian divers went missing.

A Devastating Discovery

Rescue teams, along with divers from Arkipelago Divers and Beach Resort, launched a frantic search. At 1:50 PM, they found one of the missing divers—unconscious and unresponsive. He was rushed to a hospital in Batangas but was declared dead on arrival.

The search continued for the remaining diver. Hours later, at 5:34 PM, rescuers made a heartbreaking discovery—his lifeless body floating near the shoreline, with both arms missing. Authorities believe he was knocked unconscious by the strong currents before drowning and possibly being attacked by a marine predator.

A Stern Warning from the PCG

Following this incident, the PCG is doubling down on its call for stricter safety measures. Divers are reminded to:
• Check weather and water conditions before heading out.
• Dive with a certified guide who knows the area well.
• Stay within the planned depth and dive time to avoid unexpected dangers.
• Always carry emergency signaling devices like whistles and surface markers.

The waters around the Philippines are stunning but can be unpredictable. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder: no matter how experienced you are, the ocean must always be respected.
