Looks like Philippine-made steel is making its mark on the world stage. SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the country’s largest steel producer, just sent another massive shipment of high-strength reinforcing steel to Canada, specifically for a subway project in Vancouver.

On January 30, SteelAsia exported 32,000 metric tons of steel from its Davao facility, bringing in PHP1.1 billion (around USD19 million) in export value. This latest batch pushes SteelAsia’s total contribution to the Vancouver subway project to 87,000 metric tons, worth a whopping PHP3.2 billion.

A Vote of Confidence in Pinoy Steel

SteelAsia chairman and CEO Benjamin Yao couldn’t be prouder. “We have repeat orders from the same buyer and project, a vote of confidence in our reliability as a supplier and in the quality of our products,” he shared. It’s not just international buyers—top property developers in the Philippines also trust SteelAsia for their big projects.

Expansion Mode: More Steel, More Jobs

SteelAsia isn’t stopping there. The company is investing PHP65 billion to build four new manufacturing facilities across Luzon and Mindanao. One of the biggest projects in the pipeline is the Candelaria plant in Quezon, which will receive PHP30 billion in funding. This plant will focus on producing heavy structural steel, a product the country still imports from China, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan.

With these upcoming plants, SteelAsia is set to double its production capacity to 6 million metric tons—a major leap from the current 3 million metric tons. That means more jobs, more local production, and a stronger presence for Philippine steel in both local and global markets.

A Bright Future for Philippine Steel

SteelAsia’s growing presence in major infrastructure projects abroad is proof that Filipino-made steel can compete on the world stage. With massive investments in local production, the future looks bright for the country’s steel industry—both at home and overseas.
