PNP Chief Honors Brave Cop Injured In Line Of Duty: 'A True Hero'

It was a moment of honor and recognition at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame, Quezon City, as Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, personally awarded medals to Police Chief Master Sergeant (PCMS) Deogracias N. Basang for his exceptional bravery.
PCMS Basang, who sustained serious injuries during a high-risk police operation in Pasig City, received the Medalya ng Kadakilaan (PNP Heroism Medal) and Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (PNP Wounded Medal) in a ceremony on February 7, 2025.
A Heroic Act in the Line of Duty
Just days earlier, on February 2, 2025, PCMS Basang and his team from the Marikina City Police Station were executing a warrant of arrest tied to two murder cases. But things quickly escalated when the suspect, refusing to surrender, pulled a firearm and attempted a daring escape in his vehicle.
During the chase, Basang put himself in harm’s way to stop the fleeing suspect—who ultimately struck him with the getaway car. Despite his injuries, he remained focused, ensuring the suspect was apprehended. The operation ended successfully, thanks in no small part to Basang’s unwavering dedication.
A Well-Deserved Honor
At the awarding ceremony, PGEN Marbil praised Basang’s selflessness and heroism, saying, "PCMS Basang’s courage in the face of danger is a true testament to the values of the PNP. His actions remind us of the sacrifices our police officers make every day to keep our communities safe."
