Even while undergoing treatment, Pope Francis found a way to mark a special milestone—his 12th anniversary as leader of the Catholic Church.

On Thursday afternoon, medical staff at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital surprised the Pope with a cake, complete with candles, to celebrate his papal anniversary. Despite his ongoing health challenges, the 87-year-old Pontiff reportedly took part in the Spiritual Exercises for the Roman Curia via video link, joining prayers from his hospital room.

The Holy See Press Office shared an update on his condition, noting that Pope Francis continues to receive respiratory therapy. At night, he uses non-invasive mechanical ventilation, while during the day, he relies on high-flow oxygen through nasal cannulas. His clinical condition remains stable, though still complex.

The Pope was admitted to the hospital on February 14 due to bilateral pneumonia. A new medical bulletin is expected Friday evening, offering further insights into his recovery.

For now, Pope Francis remains in the care of his medical team, continuing both his physical treatment and spiritual leadership—even from a hospital bed.
