After a year-long break from the volleyball court, Rachel Daquis, one of the Philippines’ most adored volleyball icons, is back—but she’s playing it smart. At 36, Daquis is embracing a step-by-step approach as she suits up for her new team, the Farm Fresh Foxies, in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference.

This new chapter comes after an impressive six-year run with Cignal, where she became a cornerstone of the team since joining in 2017. But before fans can see Daquis in full swing, she’s making it clear: there’s no rush.

“I’m taking it one step at a time,” Daquis shared ahead of Farm Fresh’s highly anticipated debut against her former team, Cignal, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. “Wala pang certain time [for me to play]. Ayoko din naman na pagbalik ko, ma-injure. So dapat talagang 100% na kaya talaga.”

From Hiatus to Hustle

Daquis’ year away from volleyball was far from uneventful. She threw herself into academics and business ventures, earning a degree from the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management (ISCAHM). The institution holds sentimental value for Daquis as it was founded by the father of her former teammate, Vanie Gandler.

If that weren’t impressive enough, Daquis also launched Forn De Manila, a bakery in Barcelona, Spain, proudly bringing Filipino flavors to Europe. “Guys, please support Forn de Manila,” she beamed. “Nag-aral ako kasi siyempre, ‘di naman tayo forever volleyball player, so meron tayong backup plans.”

Why Farm Fresh?

When Farm Fresh came calling, Daquis found herself drawn to their vision—not just for her career but for her future. “Ang pinakamagandang tumatak sa akin ‘yung plano nila sa loob at labas ng volleyball,” she said. “Hindi lang as a volleyball player ‘yung plano nila sa’yo. Alam mo, ‘di naman tayo forever na player.”

The warm welcome from the team’s owners, the Lao family, sealed the deal for Daquis. “Para na din akong anak talaga. Sobrang thank you po sa Farm Fresh and kay Tito Frank,” she added.

Ready for the Comeback

Now, with just a month of training under her belt, Daquis is focused on reacquainting herself with the intensity of professional volleyball. “Kakasabay ko pa lang sa Farm Fresh last month, so kailangan makabalik ako sa kapa ng bola,” she admitted.

Fans are eager to see how this volleyball queen will blend her experience, determination, and newfound insights as she steps onto the court again. One thing’s for sure: Rachel Daquis is back—and when she’s ready, she’ll undoubtedly remind everyone why she’s one of the sport’s most beloved stars.
