The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses made a powerful statement on Friday as they overcame a shaky start and an emotional Game 2 setback to emerge victorious in the 2024 V-League Women’s Collegiate Challenge. With an impressive 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, 25-14 win over the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws, UST brought home the championship crown at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

After the heart-stopping ending of their previous match, where UST prematurely celebrated what they thought was the winning point in Set 5, the Golden Tigresses were determined not to let history repeat itself. They knew they had something to prove, and they did just that in Game 3’s sudden-death finale.

The Lady Tamaraws came out swinging in the first set, but UST’s resilience shone through. After dropping the opening set, the Golden Tigresses found their footing and gradually turned the tide. It wasn’t just about skill—it was about bouncing back stronger and hungrier.

The highlight of the game? The unstoppable performance of Finals MVP Angge Poyos. Fresh off an illness that kept her out of Game 2, Poyos returned with a vengeance, racking up 31 points on 29 attacks and two blocks, while also contributing eight excellent receptions. Her fiery plays and unrelenting energy were instrumental in UST’s comeback, making her the heart and soul of the team’s triumphant run.

“Very happy ako kasi nakabalik ako sa Game 3. Unang-una, goal ko lang talaga ang makatulong sa team, so thankful na nakuha namin yung championship,” shared the 20-year-old outside hitter, who led UST to their first V-League title since 2010.

UST head coach Kungfu Reyes was all smiles as he reflected on the team’s victory. “Masaya yung grupo, at least nakarecover kami from an upset loss doon sa Game 2. Overwhelming yung tuwa na nararamdaman namin,” he said. He also acknowledged the absence of Em Banagua but praised the team’s depth and resilience, noting how everyone stepped up when it mattered most.

With the momentum shifting their way after securing the third set, UST went on a rampage in the fourth. An early 14-6 lead, thanks to a service ace by Reg Jurado and an attack error by FEU’s Lovely Lopez, set the tone for what would be a dominant final set. Poyos and Jurado combined forces in a relentless assault that left FEU scrambling to keep up. The set ended with an 11-point victory margin, as UST’s Pia Abbu and Jurado’s back-to-back hits sealed the deal.

Despite FEU’s strong start, their effort waned as UST’s firepower proved too much to handle. FEU’s Bakanke led her squad with 16 points, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the surging Tigresses.

With this win, the Golden Tigresses not only reclaimed the V-League title but also banished the ghost of their earlier misstep. It’s a story of redemption, perseverance, and sheer determination—a fitting end for a team that’s back to its championship-winning ways. The roar of the Tigresses is louder than ever, and they’ve shown that they’re truly back on top.
