Seasoned Private Lawyers Step Up For VP Impeachment Trial: 'It's About Justice, Not Politics'

The House of Representatives is gearing up for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, and its legal team is getting a major boost from seasoned private lawyers. House Secretary-General Reginald “Reggie” Velasco assured the public that these legal professionals are driven by a commitment to justice, not political grudges.

“The volunteer lawyers assisting the House impeachment team are not merely driven by anger, as some have suggested. Rather, they are dedicated to the cause of justice and public service,” Velasco said, shutting down speculations that personal motives are at play.

These lawyers, many of whom have years of experience working with public prosecutors, bring serious legal firepower to the House’s impeachment case. Their involvement, Velasco emphasized, is about ensuring due process and upholding the rule of law.

No Special Treatment for Law Firms

Velasco also took the opportunity to clear up rumors that the House had enlisted a specific private law firm for the case.
“Contrary to some reports, DivinaLaw is not among the private lawyers engaged by the House,” he clarified.

Instead, the team consists of independent legal experts who have stepped up to make sure the trial is handled properly and fairly.

Transparency and Cooperation

Velasco reassured the public that the House remains committed to transparency and due process. “This impeachment trial should be guided by legal principles rather than political narratives,” he said.
Just this week, Velasco and his team inspected the Senate’s facilities, including the main session hall where the trial will take place and the Sen. Arturo M. Tolentino Room, which will serve as the prosecution’s base.

He also expressed gratitude to Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero and the Senate leadership for ensuring the House prosecutors are well-prepared for the trial.

“The professionalism and dedication of the Senate leadership and staff are commendable, and we at the House of Representatives value the spirit of inter-chamber cooperation in serving the Filipino people,” Velasco noted.

House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the House and Senate.

With the trial set to begin in June, all eyes will be on how these legal heavyweights navigate what is expected to be one of the most closely watched impeachment proceedings in recent history.
