TikTok was briefly banned in the United States on January 19, 2025, only to return to service a few hours later. The popular social media app, which boasts over 170 million U.S. users and supports more than 7 million small businesses, went dark amid ongoing security concerns. However, it didn’t take long for things to change, thanks to a statement by former President Donald Trump on his Truth app.

Trump’s message was clear: he’s asking companies not to let TikTok stay offline. He announced plans to issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period before the law’s prohibitions take effect. The goal? To allow time for a deal that would protect U.S. national security while keeping TikTok operational. Trump proposed a joint venture where the U.S. would hold a 50% ownership stake, ensuring the platform remains in “good hands.”

In his statement, Trump emphasized the significance of TikTok in sharing upcoming events, including his Inauguration on Monday. He assured that any companies helping to keep TikTok online before his order would face no liabilities.

Meanwhile, TikTok took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm its service restoration efforts. The company expressed gratitude to Trump for his clarity and assurance, highlighting the platform’s importance in fostering free speech and supporting small businesses. TikTok also committed to working with Trump on a long-term solution to ensure its continued presence in the U.S.
For TikTok fans, it’s a relief to see the app back so quickly. The next few days will be crucial as the proposed deal unfolds, potentially reshaping the future of TikTok in the United States.
