Time To Fix EPIRA And Relieve Filipino Consumers - Are You With Us?

In 2001, the Philippines embarked on a significant journey toward a more efficient and competitive energy market with the passing of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA). This pro-market reform was intended to deliver stable, reliable, and reasonably priced electricity across the nation. However, more than two decades on, millions of Filipinos are still calling for electricity that is not only more affordable but also consistently available to power their daily lives and businesses. Addressing this, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized during his latest State of the Nation Address (SONA) the pressing need for amendments to EPIRA. This announcement has spurred a series of hearings by the Committee on Energy in the House of Representatives, as they aim to reform this critical piece of legislation.

In light of these recent developments, Kuryente.org is eager to deepen our involvement by conducting a consumer consultation meeting. This session will serve as a platform to gather insights, experiences, and recommendations from electricity consumers—particularly those from residential and small business sectors—on how to shape the EPIRA amendments to better serve the people’s needs.

Why Your Voice Matters

This consultation is more than just a conversation; it is a chance to directly contribute to the reform process. Every electricity consumer—whether a homeowner or a small business owner—has unique needs and concerns when it comes to affordability, security, and the quality of their power supply. By participating in this consultation, you can help us address issues ranging from high electricity prices to frequent outages. Together, we can ensure that the voices of the consumers most impacted by the EPIRA amendments are not just heard but are actively represented in the policy-making process.

The goal of this event is twofold. First, we will facilitate discussions that allow participants to share their concerns and suggestions on how to shape EPIRA to prioritize affordability, security, and sustainability in our electricity supply. Second, we aim to consolidate these inputs into a unified consumer position, which will then be formally presented to the House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy.

Get Involved, Make a Difference

During the consultation, we will identify clear opportunities for collaboration among consumer groups to advocate for EPIRA reform. By defining roles and responsibilities, we can establish a solid foundation for engaging in the amendment process. This is a unique opportunity for us to work together toward a common goal: a more accessible, fair, and reliable electricity system for everyone.

We welcome all contributions and proposals—your insights and experiences are invaluable in helping us advocate for a reformed EPIRA that truly serves the people. Let’s harness this momentum to champion change in the energy sector and push for reforms that prioritize the needs of Filipino electricity consumers.
Together, let’s make a powerful impact. If you’re a homeowner association or an organization who wants to pitch in, join us this December by sending an expression of interest to kuryente.org@gmail.com and be part of the movement for affordable, secure, and sustainable electricity in the Philippines.
