Sumisip, Basilan – January 22, 2025. What started as a peacebuilding mission tragically turned into a violent encounter in Barangay Lower Cabengbeng, leaving two soldiers dead and twelve others injured. The 32nd Infantry Battalion was en route to meet with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representatives for a community engagement when they were ambushed by armed groups.

The clash, involving lawless elements led by Najal Buena and Oman Hajal Jalis, escalated when another group, allegedly linked to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), joined the fray. The attack has drawn condemnation from military and government leaders alike, as it overshadowed efforts to foster peace and development in the area.

“We deeply mourn the loss of our soldiers who selflessly dedicated themselves to securing peace and ensuring the safety of our communities,” Brigadier General Alvin V. Luzon of the 101st Infantry Brigade said. He called the violence “senseless” and emphasized that the soldiers were working to protect a critical livelihood initiative in the region.

The attack has also raised concerns about violations of the gun ban intended to maintain peace in Basilan. Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. strongly condemned the incident, calling on the MILF leadership to assist in holding the perpetrators accountable.

“Our deepest sympathies go to the families of the fallen heroes,” Galvez said, assuring the public that peace mechanisms, such as the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities and Joint Peace Security Teams, are being deployed to de-escalate tensions and investigate the incident thoroughly.

The military has vowed to continue its mission of peace and development, working closely with local government units, MILF leadership, and other stakeholders to ensure justice is served and such violence is prevented in the future.

As Basilan mourns this tragic loss, the call for unity and adherence to peace agreements has become even more urgent. Brig. Gen. Luzon concluded, “We remain steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding development and the safety of our communities. This tragedy will not deter our mission to achieve lasting peace.”

With investigations underway, the public is urged to remain calm as authorities work tirelessly to address the incident and uphold the region's stability.
