Tropang Giga Blasts Ginebra; Moves Closer To PBA Governors' Cup Title Repeat

Tropang Giga didn’t just come back from their two-day break—they returned with a vengeance. Shaking off a two-game slump, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and his squad stormed the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday night with incredible energy and laser-focused shooting, overwhelming Barangay Ginebra, 99-72. This emphatic win puts TNT one victory away from repeating as PBA Governors' Cup champions, with a chance to clinch the series on Friday at the Big Dome or, if needed, a winner-take-all Game Seven on Sunday.

The Tropang Giga were on fire from the get-go, quickly building a 23-point lead by halftime. A sizzling 30-13 run in the second quarter set the tone, and they didn’t let up in the third, widening the gap with a 23-15 blitz that left Ginebra reeling. By the end of the third quarter, Ginebra coach Tim Cone had seen enough, pulling his starters to save their energy for what could be their last shot in Game Six. Coach Chot Reyes followed suit, as TNT had firmly established control.

It was a statement game from TNT, who looked unstoppable after back-to-back losses in Games Three and Four. Their offense clicked with 58-percent shooting, an incredible display compared to Ginebra’s 27 percent in the first half. Calvin Oftana, Kelly Williams, and RHJ led the scoring charge, each hitting double digits early on, while Scottie Thompson was the only King to break through with 13 points in the first half.

Hollis-Jefferson capped off his night with 16 points and 10 rebounds, logging a solid 31 minutes, while RR Pogoy matched his 16 points. Oftana, Williams, and Jayson Castro chipped in 15, 11, and 10 points, respectively, adding to TNT's commanding performance. For Ginebra, it was a rough outing for Justin Brownlee, who managed only 3-of-13 from the field.

In the post-game press conference, Coach Chot Reyes praised the team’s resilience and defensive prowess, especially after tough losses in the previous games. “The most important thing was not to panic and keep our heads around us so we can make good decisions,” Reyes said. “Then we focused on our strength, and that’s our defense. We went back to what brought us here—playing great defense.”

With Game Six just around the corner, the Tropang Giga are locked in, ready to bring their best again as they eye the title. Will Ginebra respond, or is this TNT’s year to go back-to-back? All eyes will be on the Big Dome come Friday.
