Tropical Depression Gener Gains Strength While Moving Slowly: Here's What You Need To Know

Tropical Depression #GenerPH is making its presence known, slowly but surely. As of 10:00 AM today (September 16, 2024), Gener is about 325 kilometers east-northeast of Casiguran, Aurora, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h, gusts up to 70 km/h, and strong winds extending outwards up to 360 km from its center. It's moving at a snail’s pace west-southwestward, but don’t let that fool you—it is gathering strength and could potentially upgrade to a tropical storm before making landfall.

Who's Affected?

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is up for several areas in Luzon, including Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and even the northern parts of Quezon. People in these areas can expect winds of 39-61 km/h in the next 36 hours. While the impact is minimal for now, those living in these areas should stay alert for updates.

Rain, Wind, and Waves: What to Watch Out For

The Southwest Monsoon is also adding to the mix, especially in regions like MIMAROPA, Bicol, and parts of Visayas and Mindanao. Expect strong winds and heavy rains today through Wednesday, with coastal areas being hit the hardest. A gale warning is already in effect, and sea travel is considered risky, especially for small boats and motorbancas. If you're planning any sea travel in these areas, you might want to reschedule.

What’s Next for Gener?

The forecast shows that Gener is likely to make landfall in Isabela or Aurora in the next 24 hours and could emerge over La Union or Pangasinan by tomorrow morning. After that, it will continue its west-southwestward journey before possibly turning northwest by Wednesday. It’s expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late tomorrow or early Wednesday, but not before it dumps more rain and brings stronger winds.

There’s also a chance Gener could strengthen into a tropical storm as it moves over the West Philippine Sea.

Stay Safe and Stay Informed

While the threat level is still relatively low, it’s important to stay informed and be prepared, especially if you live in areas prone to flooding or strong winds. Monitor local weather updates and follow any instructions from your local government or disaster risk reduction offices.
