Tropical Depression Kristine Stirs Up Philippine Sea: What To Expect Over The Coming Days

Tropical Depression "Kristine" is on the move, maintaining its strength as it makes its way west-southwest across the Philippine Sea. As of 11:00 AM on October 21, Kristine is still gathering steam and could potentially ramp up to a tropical storm in the next 12 hours. But what does that mean for us over the next few days? Let’s break down what we know so far.

Tracking Kristine's Path

Right now, Kristine is situated about 870 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, traveling at a brisk pace of 30 km/h. The forecast shows it taking a generally westward path until tomorrow morning (October 22), then veering slightly northwest as it continues on its journey. If things go according to the current forecast, we could see Kristine make landfall over Northern Luzon by Friday, October 25.

The storm is expected to intensify significantly along the way, with favorable conditions—think warm sea temperatures and minimal wind interference—potentially boosting Kristine to a typhoon by Thursday evening or Friday morning. So, it’s best to keep an eye out, especially if you’re in the northeastern portion of Cagayan.

Wind Warnings and Rainfall Outlook

As of now, some areas are already under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1, which indicates minimal to minor impacts from strong winds. But don’t let your guard down just yet! If Kristine strengthens as expected, we could see higher wind signals, possibly up to Wind Signal No. 4.

Today, the following areas are likely to experience strong to gale-force gusts, especially in coastal and upland areas: Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, parts of Palawan, Siquijor, Bohol, the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, and parts of the Davao Region. The wind conditions will change as the storm progresses, so make sure to check updates frequently.

Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall advisory points to a wet few days ahead for regions including Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Expect showers to intensify as Kristine moves closer to land.

Sea Conditions: Mariners, Take Note

If you’re planning to venture out to sea, think twice. Moderate to rough sea conditions are expected over several coastal areas, with waves reaching up to 4.5 meters in some places. Mariners, especially those in small boats or less-experienced operators, are strongly advised to stay onshore. Conditions are roughest off the coasts of Isabela, Aurora, the Polillo Islands, and Catanduanes, among others.

What’s Next?

While Kristine is still far from land, it’s important to stay updated as changes in its track and intensity are possible. With the storm potentially reaching typhoon status before landfall, preparation is key. Keep those emergency kits ready, stay informed through weather advisories, and take all necessary precautions if you’re in affected areas.

Stay safe, and don’t let your guard down just yet—Kristine may still have some surprises in store.
