Wawa Dam's Heroic Role In Battling Super Typhoon Carina

When Super Typhoon Carina hit, it brought with it the kind of heavy rains and flooding that could have spelled disaster for many communities. But thanks to the newly developed Upper Wawa Dam by Prime Infra-led WawaJVCo Inc., the story had a different ending.

The Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project, specifically its Phase 2—the Upper Wawa Dam—began filling its reservoir on July 10. This timing couldn't have been better, as it played a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of Carina's wrath.

During a briefing on July 26, Rizal Governor Nina Ynares informed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that the dam's presence significantly reduced the flooding in vulnerable areas. "Mr. President, some time this month, we were together during the inauguration of Upper Wawa Dam. If without it, I feel that, most likely, San Mateo and Montalban would be down; and definitely, Marikina and parts of Quezon City and even Pasig would be affected,” Ynares explained.

President Marcos, who led the dam's impounding ceremony, saw firsthand how quickly the reservoir filled due to the typhoon. "In three days, ganoon ‘yung tubig na bumagsak (from Carina)," he remarked.

The dam, with its massive 450-hectare reservoir, managed to hold around 90 million cubic meters of water during the storm. This impressive feat not only helped protect lives and property but also showcased the dam's potential beyond just supplying water—it became a crucial tool for flood management.

National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Administrator Eduardo Guillen echoed these sentiments, highlighting how the dam's ability to store excess water lessened the flood's impact on Metro Manila. “Mas matindi sana ang pinsala natin kung wala yung Upper Wawa Dam kasi lahat ng naipon niyang tubig ay sumalanta sa Metro Manila,” Guillen noted.

Looking ahead, the Upper Wawa Dam is set to start supplying bulk water by the end of 2025. WawaJVCo is committed to working with local communities to build resilience against future weather challenges, ensuring their projects contribute positively to both the environment and society.
