Wetland Win: Senate Greenlights Bigger Protection For Las Pinas Paranaque Wetland Park

The Senate just took a big step toward protecting the Las Piñas Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP) – the only wetland ecosystem left in Metro Manila and a global environmental gem. On Monday, January 26, senators voted 21-0 in favor of Senate Bill No. 1536, also known as the LPPWP Protection Act.

This bill is all about giving the park an upgrade in terms of protection. It adds a 3-kilometer seaward buffer zone to safeguard the area’s biodiversity and ensure the ecological integrity of both its land and water. This move isn’t just about hugging trees. It’s also about fulfilling our global commitments under agreements like the Ramsar Convention and the ASEAN Agreement on Conservation of Nature.

Senator Cynthia Villar, who chairs the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, couldn’t have been prouder. She pointed out how this wetland serves as Metro Manila’s green shield, helping protect against disasters, supporting the livelihoods of 300,000 fisherfolk, and contributing to food security. Basically, it’s a powerhouse of benefits for the environment and the community.

In case you didn’t know, the LPPWP isn’t your average park. It’s a mix of shallow waters, tidal marshes, mudflats, and mangrove forests. These ecosystems are home to over 159 bird species (including endangered ones like the Philippine Duck and Chinese Egret), 23 mangrove species, and countless fish and mollusks. Oh, and it also plays a key role in keeping the waters from Parañaque, Las Piñas, and Bacoor flowing freely.

With this expanded buffer zone, Villar says, the LPPWP will be better equipped to handle challenges from development and climate change. It’s a win-win for nature and the people of Metro Manila.
