Today, October 29, was a day to remember for SB19 as they were honored at the National Library of the Philippines during a special ceremony. The event marked the ceremonial turnover of official replicas of the historic 1734 Murillo Velarde Map, a significant piece of Philippine heritage. This moment beautifully intertwined the nation’s rich history with the vibrant world of Filipino pop music, showcasing the group’s role as cultural ambassadors.

As guests gathered, NLP Assistant Director Edgardo B. Quiros welcomed everyone, setting a warm tone for the ceremony. He was joined by heads of various NLP divisions and representatives from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Speaking on behalf of NCCA Chairperson Victorino Mapa Manalo, Deputy Executive Director for Operations Bernan Joseph R. Corpuz highlighted the cultural importance of the day.

Mr. Mel V. Velarde, Chairman of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication and the NOW Group, was pivotal in this event. He donated the original Murillo Velarde Map to the NLP and took a moment to emphasize SB19’s significant impact on Filipino pride. In his inspiring message, he said, “Just as the Velarde Map once guided explorers to new frontiers, SB19’s music and dedication serve as a beacon for the next generation, lighting our way to endless possibilities.”

The ceremony also featured a special music video presentation of SB19’s hit song “What,” which visually celebrated the Murillo Velarde Map and encapsulated the group’s mission to elevate Filipino pride globally. This map is not just a geographical artifact; it represents the resilience, cultural identity, and courage of the Filipino people—qualities that SB19 embodies as they inspire talent across the globe.

Following the heartwarming ceremony, SB19 expressed their gratitude for this incredible honor. They encouraged fellow artists to embrace Filipino culture and heritage, likening it to a "map" that will guide future generations. The group’s message was clear: there’s so much richness in Filipino culture that deserves to be celebrated and shared.

After the ceremony, SB19 visited the NLP Permanent Gallery, where they had the chance to view the original Murillo Velarde Map. Dr. Michael Charleston “Xiao” B. Chua, the gallery curator, guided the group and the Velarde family through this unique experience.
