Sen. Bong Go Defends Duterte's War On Drugs: 'It Was A Promise To The People'

Senator Bong Go recently spoke out about the ongoing criticisms surrounding former President Rodrigo Duterte's controversial war on drugs, emphasizing that it was a campaign promise that resonated with the public and contributed to Duterte's electoral success. Go highlighted how Duterte's commitment to combating illegal drugs and crime was not just a policy but a "contract" with the Filipino people, aimed at creating a safer society.

During each of Duterte’s State of the Nation Addresses (SONAs) from 2016 to 2021, he consistently reiterated his administration's stance against illegal drugs, earning applause from Congress members who supported the initiative. "The former President has always been clear—his administration never sanctioned nor tolerated any form of senseless killings," Go stressed, reminding the public that Duterte was a lawyer and former prosecutor who respected the rule of law.

As for his role, Go clarified his position during Duterte’s administration, stating that he was merely responsible for scheduling, appointments, and presidential engagements as the Special Assistant to the President. “I had no involvement in police operations,” he said. "My office had no say in how the police conducted their operations, and I didn’t handle any presidential funds."

Go also expressed full support for the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other uniformed personnel, mentioning how he and Duterte pushed for salary increases to support those in the line of duty. However, he was quick to clarify that there was never a "reward system" in place for the deaths of individuals involved in the drug trade.

Reflecting on the current situation, Go expressed his disappointment, saying, "It’s unfortunate that politics now taints investigations, and the efforts of the previous administration to clean up the streets and protect the future of our country and children are being overlooked."

He concluded by reminding the public that the war on drugs had widespread support at the time and that many Filipinos felt safer in their communities. "Let’s not forget the difference it made when, once upon a time, people felt secure walking the streets," Go remarked.
