Severe Tropical Storm Leon Intensifies: What You Need To Know

Severe Tropical Storm Leon is getting stronger as it churns over the Philippine Sea. As of 4:00 PM today, the storm was located about 725 km east of Echague, Isabela, packing maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h and gusts up to 125 km/h. Leon is currently moving west-northwest at 15 km/h, and its storm-force winds are extending outward up to 620 km from the center, bringing strong gusts even to areas far from its core.

Where Is Leon Heading?

Leon is expected to maintain its west-northwest track until tomorrow morning before gradually shifting northwest. Current forecasts suggest it could make landfall along the eastern coast of Taiwan by Thursday afternoon or evening, October 31. While it looks like it might stay away from a direct hit on the Philippines, there’s still a chance it could come very close to the Batanes area, so residents there should stay vigilant.

If you're wondering about Leon's intensity, forecasters expect it to rapidly strengthen over the next 24 hours. It might reach typhoon status soon and could even escalate to a super typhoon as it approaches Batanes. So, it's definitely not the time to let your guard down.

Wind Signals in Place

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is currently raised in several areas across Luzon, including Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, parts of Ilocos, the Cordillera Region, and even extending down to some parts of the Bicol Region. This means you can expect winds of 39 to 61 km/h in these places within the next 36 hours, which could cause minimal to minor damage to life and property. Gusty conditions will also be felt in various regions outside of the wind signal areas, particularly in coastal and elevated areas.

What's the Rainfall Outlook?

Heavy rains aren’t out of the picture either. PAGASA has issued a rainfall advisory that could bring downpours across Northern Luzon in the coming days. Localized thunderstorms and strong winds may be more intense in higher and coastal areas, so keep those umbrellas handy and stay tuned for updates.

Mariners, Stay Ashore!

For those planning to sail, this might not be the best time to do so. Sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough in several coastal areas, especially near Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon. Waves could reach heights of up to 5.5 meters, making sea travel risky for all vessels. Even small boats in less affected regions are advised to proceed with caution or stay in port if possible.

Stay Safe and Informed

As Leon makes its way across the Philippine Sea, it’s crucial to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins. The storm may bring stronger winds and heavier rains over the next few days, especially if it strengthens into a typhoon. Those in vulnerable areas should prepare for possible evacuations and follow local authorities' safety instructions.
