Busan, South Korea - Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), was stabbed in the neck during a visit to the southeastern port city of Busan.

The assailant, an unidentified man believed to be in his 60s or 70s, attacked Lee with a 20-30 centimeter-long unidentified weapon while he was touring the construction site of a new airport on Busan's Gadeok Island.

Emergency services acted swiftly to transport Lee to Pusan National University Hospital, where he underwent emergency treatment for a 1-centimeter laceration on the left side of his neck.

Due to concerns about potential massive bleeding around Lee's jugular vein, he was subsequently airlifted by helicopter to Seoul National University Hospital for surgery. Officials have stated that the wound is not life-threatening.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailant approached Lee under the guise of a supporter, requesting an autograph amidst a crowd of supporters and reporters. The suspect, who has maintained silence about his identity and motive, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody by the police.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect was present at an event attended by Lee in Busan last month. Video footage uploaded on YouTube shows the suspect waiting for Lee in the crowd during the previous encounter, wearing the same paper crown with the words "I'm Lee Jae-myung."

President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed deep concern over Lee's safety and ordered a swift and thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized that such violence should never be tolerated under any circumstances. The DP condemned the attack, labeling it as an act of terror and a threat to democracy.

In response to the attack, both the country's police chief and prosecutors announced the formation of special investigation teams in Busan to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident.

Security protection for key personnel will be strengthened to prevent similar incidents in the future, according to Yoon Hee-keun, the commissioner general of the National Police Agency.
