In a heartfelt farewell at Malacañang on Thursday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his deep gratitude to European Union (EU) Ambassador to the Philippines Luc Serge Gustave Eugène Véron. As the ambassador's tenure in the country comes to a close, President Marcos reflected on the significant strides in Philippine-EU relations during Véron's time in office.

"I, myself, have seen how you've been a true partner over the last three years," Marcos remarked. "In that time, we've witnessed a much deeper connection between the Philippines and the EU. I don’t think we’ve ever had such a close relationship with the EU as we do now, and I’m thrilled that’s the case."

Véron, who arrived in the Philippines in December 2020, played a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral ties, especially in areas like climate change, trade, and digital connectivity. His efforts also extended to the peace process in Mindanao and humanitarian assistance during natural disasters, including the Covid-19 pandemic.

To honor his contributions, Véron was awarded the Order of Sikatuna with the rank of Grand Cross (Datu), Silver Distinction (Katangiang Pilak) during his farewell call. This prestigious award acknowledged his dedication to fostering stronger relations between the Philippines and the EU, particularly his support for peace in the Bangsamoro region and his efforts to uphold international law in the West Philippine Sea.

Throughout his tenure, Véron ensured the EU’s unwavering support for the Philippines’ development goals. From providing humanitarian aid to boosting trade, the EU remained a steadfast partner. In 2023 alone, approved EU investments in the country amounted to over $13 billion, reflecting the strong economic ties that have flourished under his watch.

As Véron prepares to leave, President Marcos' message was clear: the bond between the Philippines and the EU has never been stronger, and much of that is thanks to Ambassador Luc Véron's hard work and dedication.
