The suspect behind the tragic shooting of a family driver in the Ayala Tunnel south lane in Makati City has been apprehended. Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos confirmed the arrest Tuesday afternoon, shedding light on the distressing road rage incident.

Officials said the suspect was positively identified by an eyewitness present during the shooting. Investigations revealed that the incident transpired around 2:30 PM on May 28, 2024, during a road rage altercation within the Ayala southbound tunnel.

Tragically, the altercation resulted in the death of the driver of a Toyota Innova who was accompanied by a housemaid and a 7-year-old child at the time of the incident.

Reports indicate that while the Toyota Innova was en route from Bonifacio Global City to Ayala Alabang, it became involved in a dispute with the driver of a black Mercedes Benz. The situation escalated when the occupant of the Mercedes Benz discharged a firearm, striking the Toyota Innova's right passenger window and fatally injuring the driver.

Despite sustaining gunshot wounds, the driver managed to guide the vehicle to safety at the right corner of the EDSA Ayala tunnel southbound.

Authorities recovered crucial evidence from the scene, including a cartridge matching a .40 caliber pistol. Subsequent investigations traced the black Mercedes Benz, bearing personalized plate number BCS77, to an individual residing in Las Piñas. Further inquiries led authorities to the suspect's residence in Pasig City.

The suspect has been identified as Gerard Raymund Yu. Two .40 caliber pistols were seized from Yu, and both firearms have been submitted to the PNP Forensic Group for ballistic examination. Additionally, Yu underwent a paraffin test, which yielded positive results for gunpowder nitrate.

Abalos emphasized that, according to the sole surviving witness, the motive behind the altercation was a dispute on the road. He noted that Yu has no prior criminal record.
