Taal Volcano Update: Low-Level Unrest But VOG Still Disrupts Daily Life

Taal Volcano is back in the spotlight as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) updates its status. While the volcano is at Alert Level 1, signaling low-level unrest, the effects of volcanic smog, or vog, are still being felt by nearby communities, leading to class suspensions in some areas.

As of August 20, 2024, PHIVOLCS reports that Taal remains relatively calm on the seismic front, with zero volcanic earthquakes recorded. However, don’t let that fool you—Taal is still showing signs of activity. The Main Crater Lake’s temperature remains a sizzling 72.7°C, and the lake's acidity level was last recorded at a pH of 0.20. That’s some seriously acidic water!

The real showstopper here is the sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. At 5,128 tonnes per day, these volcanic gases are responsible for the vog that’s been disrupting life around Taal. The vog has been causing hazy conditions, prompting health warnings and even the suspension of classes in some areas.

Taal’s plume of volcanic gases has also reached a towering 2,100 meters, drifting northwest and north-northwest.

Ground deformation data indicates that the Taal Caldera is showing long-term deflation, while parts of Taal Volcano Island, particularly the northern and southeastern flanks, are experiencing short-term inflation.

PHIVOLCS continues to advise against entry into the Taal Volcano Island, especially the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) areas like the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures. Boating on Taal Lake and flying close to the volcano are also a no-go.

While Taal remains at a low alert level, it’s important to stay cautious. Hazards like steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and dangerous volcanic gases can still occur without much warning.

For now, residents around Taal are keeping an eye on the skies and hoping for clearer days ahead. Stay safe, and if you're in the area, always be prepared for the unexpected!
