The Philippine Senate is in mourning following the passing of former Senator Santanina Tillah Rasul on November 28, 2024. At 94, Rasul leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking achievements, most notably as the first Filipino Muslim woman elected to the Senate.

During her time in the Senate, Rasul championed causes close to her heart—education reforms, women's rights, and the protection of marginalized communities. Her efforts extended beyond legislation, as she tirelessly worked to foster peace in Sulu, her beloved homeland.

Rasul’s public service career began long before her senatorial days. She was a teacher, a staff member at the Office of the President, and served in local government as a councilor and provincial board member in Sulu. Her life was a testament to dedication and compassion, bridging divides and giving a voice to underrepresented communities.

Even after leaving the Senate, Rasul continued her advocacy. She founded the Magbassa Kita Foundation Inc., an organization focused on combatting illiteracy, particularly in Muslim communities. Her work with the foundation embodied her unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives.

To honor Rasul’s memory, the Philippine flag at the Senate is flying at half-staff. Her family has requested that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Magbassa Kita Foundation, ensuring that her mission lives on.

The Senate's tribute is not just for the loss of a former lawmaker but for a trailblazer who changed the course of Philippine history. Rest in peace, Senator Rasul. Your legacy endures in every life you’ve touched.
