Various transport groups gathered at Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City to kick off their 'Unity Walk' against the suspension of the Public Transport Modernization Program. This early morning protest saw participation from transport cooperatives not only from Metro Manila but also from Central Luzon and Calabarzon.

Carrying placards with messages urging the government to reject the suspension, the groups began their march towards Malacañang before 7 AM. Their aim: to appeal to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to continue the modernization program, emphasizing that 80 percent of transport groups have already consolidated their efforts towards modernization.

Ed Comia, convenor of the Cooperative and Corporation of the Philippine Alliance for Modernization (AKKAP MO), clarified that their protest was not intended to disrupt commuters. Instead, they sought to voice their concerns to the government.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) and the Quezon City Traffic and Transport Management Department (TTMD) were on-site to assist motorists and ensure the safety of both protesters and the general public.

Understanding the Transport Modernization Program in the Philippines

The Public Transport Modernization Program is a government initiative aimed at improving the efficiency, safety, and environmental friendliness of public transportation in the country. Key elements of the program include the phase-out of old and dilapidated jeepneys and buses, and replacing them with modern, eco-friendly vehicles that comply with Euro 4 emissions standards.

The program also seeks to professionalize the transport industry by encouraging the formation of cooperatives and corporations, thus providing better job security and benefits for drivers. By consolidating efforts, the program aims to ensure a more organized and reliable public transport system.

However, the program has faced various challenges, including financial hurdles for operators who need to upgrade their vehicles and concerns over job losses. The recent push to suspend the program has sparked significant controversy, leading to protests like the 'Unity Walk.' Transport groups argue that halting the program would waste the progress made so far and negatively impact the industry's future.

The government continues to engage with stakeholders to find a balance between modernization and addressing the concerns of transport operators, with the goal of achieving a sustainable and efficient public transport system for the Philippines.
