As of 11:00 AM on July 22, Severe Tropical Storm Carina (also known as Gaemi) is gaining strength and moving northwestward over the Philippine Sea. Currently situated about 355 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, Carina is packing maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h with gusts reaching up to 135 km/h. The storm is advancing at a pace of 15 km/h.

Residents in affected areas should brace for strong winds extending up to 340 km from Carina’s center. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been issued for Batanes, parts of Cagayan and Isabela, and the Babuyan Islands. This signal indicates strong winds that could pose minimal to minor threats to life and property.

The storm is expected to bring significant rainfall over the coming days. From now until tomorrow noon, the northeastern part of mainland Cagayan could see 100-200 mm of rain, while Batanes is forecasted to receive 100-200 mm of rain by tomorrow. The Southwest Monsoon, enhanced by Carina, will also bring moderate to intense rainfall across western Luzon and parts of the Visayas.

Strong to gale-force gusts will affect coastal and upland areas, particularly in Zambales, Bataan, MIMAROPA, and the Bicol Region today. These gusts will spread to other parts of Luzon and the Visayas by Wednesday. Mariners should avoid venturing out to sea, as seas are expected to be moderate to rough, especially along the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon.

Carina is predicted to continue intensifying and may reach typhoon status within the next 12 hours. It is projected to remain offshore, exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning. As it heads towards the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, its intensity could rapidly increase.

Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest information and follow instructions from local authorities. The next update on Carina will be issued at 5:00 PM.
