The Right-of-way challenges facing the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) have emerged as the most significant hurdle in any Philippine infrastructure endeavor, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Today, during a pivotal site inspection at the North Avenue Station, the DOTr underscored this struggle, coinciding with the inauguration of the initial drive of the Subway's Tunnel Boring Machine No. 4.

TBM No. 4, a formidable component of Contract Package 101, encompasses four northern stations: Quirino Highway Station, Tandang Sora Station, North Avenue Station, and East Valenzuela Station. DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista expressed optimism, stating, "Hopefully, we should be able to finish the tunneling up to Tandang Sora within 12 months," emphasizing the relentless pace of construction.

With construction progressing at full throttle, Secretary Bautista detailed the current status of the right-of-way (ROW) acquisition, standing at approximately 55%. He affirmed, "This will substantially add up to, and speed up the momentum of the project," underlining the crucial role ROW plays in the project's success.

DOTr Undersecretary for Railways Jeremy Regino revealed that the current right-of-way acquisition in Metro Manila is unprecedented in Philippine history, encompassing two major projects simultaneously - the Subway and the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) Project. "This time, there are two major ROWAs being undertaken by the DOTr simultaneously — one is the Subway, second is the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) Project," Regino said.

As of now, the Metro Manila Subway Project has achieved an overall progress rate of 40%. Upon completion, the subway promises a transformative commuting experience, reducing travel time between Quezon City and Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from 1 hour and 10 minutes to just 35 minutes. The subway is projected to serve up to 519,000 passengers daily, offering a faster, seamless, and convenient mode of transportation for the people of Metro Manila.
