As of 5:00 PM today, Typhoon CARINA has intensified into a formidable storm while slowly drifting over the Philippine Sea. Currently, CARINA is located about 420 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, and it's packing maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 150 km/h. The typhoon’s central pressure stands at 980 hPa, indicating its growing strength.

CARINA is moving north-northeastward at a slow pace, and its powerful winds extend up to 300 kilometers from the center. The typhoon’s current trajectory is expected to continue north-northwestward, with a gradual acceleration before turning northwest. Forecasts suggest CARINA will remain well away from the Philippine landmass, exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning. It will then pass close to the southern Ryukyu Islands and northern Taiwan before heading toward southeastern China.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals and Weather Warnings

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been hoisted for several areas, including parts of Luzon such as Batanes, eastern Cagayan, the Babuyan Islands, and northeastern Isabela. This signal warns of strong winds with speeds between 39 and 61 km/h, posing a minimal to minor threat to life and property.

Heavy rainfall is also on the horizon, with predictions indicating 100-200 mm of rain in the extreme northeastern parts of Cagayan and 50-100 mm in other affected areas like Batanes and the Babuyan Islands. This substantial rainfall could lead to flooding and landslides, especially in elevated or mountainous regions.

The Southwest Monsoon, intensified by CARINA, is expected to bring moderate to intense rainfall across western Luzon tonight through Wednesday. Severe winds and strong to gale-force gusts will affect a broad range of areas, including Metro Manila, CALABARZON, and Visayas.

Coastal Warnings

In the next 24 hours, CARINA and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon will generate moderate to rough seas, particularly along the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon. Mariners, especially those with smaller vessels, are advised to avoid venturing out to sea or take precautionary measures if they must.

What’s Next?

CARINA is projected to continue intensifying over the coming days. The public and local authorities should stay vigilant and follow updates from PAGASA for the latest advisories and warnings. For those in high-risk areas, it's crucial to adhere to evacuation orders and safety measures.

The next update on Typhoon CARINA will be released at 11:00 PM tonight. Stay safe and informed as the situation develops.
