Typhoon Julian Batters Northern Luzon: Here's What You Need To Know

Hold on tight, folks—Typhoon Julian is wreaking havoc as it barrels through Northern Luzon. As of 11:00 AM today, Julian is passing near Sabtang Island in Batanes, and things are looking pretty intense. Here's a breakdown of what we're dealing with.

Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Are on the Way

If you’re anywhere in the path of this monster storm, keep those raincoats and umbrellas handy. The peak of Julian’s devastating winds is expected to hit areas under Wind Signal No. 4 from this morning into the afternoon. And get this—there’s even a chance of upgrading to Wind Signal No. 5, meaning winds could get even more severe.

Winds will be stronger in coastal and mountainous areas, so if you're in those regions, brace for significant to severe impacts. Even areas under Signal No. 3 will feel the storm-force winds, while Signal No. 2 and Signal No. 1 zones will experience moderate to minor wind impacts.

Which Areas Will Feel Julian’s Wrath?

Today, gusty winds are expected in parts of Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Romblon, and the Bicol Region. By tomorrow, expect gusts over Ilocos Region, the Cordilleras, and parts of Cagayan and Isabela, with winds persisting in these areas until Wednesday.

Storm Surge and Coastal Hazards

Here’s another thing to keep an eye on: the risk of life-threatening storm surges along the coastlines of Batanes, Cagayan, and Ilocos Norte is high. Waves could rise up to 14 meters in Batanes and 10 meters in the Babuyan Islands, making sea travel extremely dangerous for all vessels. If you're a mariner or know one, staying in port is a must until conditions improve.

Track and Intensity

As of now, Typhoon Julian is moving northwest at 10 km/h, packing maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h with gusts up to 215 km/h. The storm is expected to intensify into a super typhoon later today or tonight. While it’s forecasted to weaken as it interacts with Taiwan’s mountainous terrain, Julian will remain a powerful force until it exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Thursday.
