Typhoon Julian Updates: Batanes Feels The Force As Julian Moves Out Of PAR

Typhoon Julian (international name: KRATHON) has been a force to reckon with these past few days, but there's some good news on the horizon. As of 5:00 PM today, Julian is making its way out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). But not before giving Batanes and the nearby areas one last test of resilience.

Current Location & Movement

Julian’s center was last spotted 95 km West Southwest of Itbayat, Batanes, moving at a steady pace of 15 km/h in a west-northwestward direction. Packing maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h and gusts reaching up to 215 km/h, this typhoon has certainly kept everyone on their toes. And while it’s showing signs of exiting PAR soon, it might even intensify further into a super typhoon category later today.

Wind Signals & Potential Impacts

Right now, Batanes is under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4, which means typhoon-force winds are battering the province with speeds between 118 to 184 km/h. Residents here are facing significant to severe threats to life and property. The northern and western parts of Babuyan Islands are not far behind, with Storm Signal No. 3 in effect.

Meanwhile, areas like Mainland Cagayan, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, and Ilocos Norte are bracing for gale-force winds under Signal No. 2. For those in Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and the northern parts of Aurora, it's Signal No. 1 and they’re experiencing strong winds that might cause minor to moderate damage.

What’s Next for Typhoon Julian?

Julian is expected to continue its current path and eventually shift its course northeastward by Wednesday, October 2. Before it leaves the PAR, it’s forecasted to cross the southwestern coast of Taiwan and, unfortunately, the rugged terrain there might trigger a weakening trend. But until then, it’s still showing strong gusts and very rough sea conditions over the northern seaboards of Luzon.

Coastal Conditions and Sea Travel Warnings

Sea travel is extremely risky at this time, especially in the northern seaboards of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Ilocos Norte, where waves could reach up to 14 meters. Gale warnings are also up for the seaboards of Northern Luzon, and the seas around these areas are expected to stay rough for the next 24 hours.
