Typhoon Leon Intensifies: What You Need To Know
Typhoon Leon (international name Kong-Rey) has picked up the pace and is making waves in the Philippine Sea! As of 5 PM today, PAGASA reported that Leon has rapidly intensified and now has sustained winds of 150 km/h and gusts reaching up to 185 km/h. Located around 505 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, Leon is inching west-northwest at 10 km/h. Here’s the latest scoop on what this storm could mean for us in the coming days.

Wind Signals and Areas on Alert

PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 in parts of Luzon, particularly in Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, and mainland Cagayan, among other areas. This means residents can expect gale-force winds, which could impact property and trees. Meanwhile, areas under Signal No. 1, including parts of Isabela, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and northern Quezon, are facing strong winds that could still bring risks, especially in exposed regions.

What’s Next for Leon?

Leon is expected to move toward Taiwan by Thursday, but not before passing close to Batanes, where it may reach super typhoon intensity. For coastal areas in Luzon, this means very rough seas, with waves up to 10 meters high in the waters near Batanes and Babuyan Islands. PAGASA advises all mariners to stay in port, as the conditions could be extremely dangerous.

Rain, Winds, and Safety Measures

For those in Metro Manila, CALABARZON, and parts of MIMAROPA, expect gusty winds tonight, with similar conditions stretching across more areas tomorrow. Coastal and mountainous residents in high-risk areas should be prepared for potential storm surges, with water levels rising between 2 to 3 meters, especially in vulnerable regions like Batanes.

Stay Tuned and Stay Safe

As Leon gets closer, PAGASA will continue to monitor the situation and release updates. For now, people in affected areas are encouraged to follow evacuation protocols and prepare for possible power outages, strong winds, and heavy rain.
