Typhoon Leon Intensifies: What You Need To Know Right Now

Typhoon "Leon" is ramping up as it moves over waters east of Cagayan. As of the 11 AM advisory on October 29, 2024, Leon’s sustained winds have reached 130 km/h, with gusts hitting 160 km/h. This is one powerful storm, and it’s on a path that could bring serious impacts to Northern Luzon, with areas like Batanes and the Babuyan Islands potentially in line for stronger conditions. Let’s break down the latest on this storm’s progress and what to expect.

Where is Leon Now, and Where is it Going?

Currently, Leon’s eye is positioned about 565 km northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, moving west-northwest at a steady 10 km/h. By tonight, it’s expected to be closer to Aparri, Cagayan, and by tomorrow morning, it’ll be just 330 km from Calayan. Leon may make its closest approach to Batanes early Thursday, potentially intensifying further. There’s even a chance it could reach super typhoon status before possibly making landfall in Taiwan later that day.

What About the Winds?

If you’re in Luzon, especially Batanes and Babuyan Islands, take caution. Leon could bring severe winds, with Wind Signal No. 3 or 4 likely for these areas, possibly going as high as Signal No. 5 if Leon continues to intensify. Winds could be especially strong in coastal and upland areas, and even places outside of the main wind signal areas – like Metro Manila, CALABARZON, and parts of MIMAROPA – may experience gusty conditions.

Heavy Rains and Flood Risks

Leon is expected to bring heavy rainfall, so make sure to stay updated with the Heavy Rainfall Outlook issued in Weather Advisory No. 5. Given the risk of flash floods and landslides in upland and low-lying areas, it’s best to keep watch and be ready to move to safer ground if needed.

Coastal Hazards: Rising Waves and Dangerous Seas

For mariners, the sea conditions will be tough, with wave heights reaching up to 10 meters near Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and northeastern Cagayan. This means all types of vessels should remain in port or seek immediate shelter. Storm surges may also bring life-threatening conditions along low-lying coastal areas in Batanes and the Babuyan Islands over the next two days.

Timeline of Key Events

-Tonight (Oct 29): Leon will be 450 km east of Aparri, Cagayan.
-Tomorrow Morning (Oct 30): Expect it to be about 330 km from Calayan, Cagayan.
- Thursday (Oct 31): The typhoon could be at its closest to Batanes early in the day, bringing the strongest winds and most significant wave activity.
- Friday (Nov 1): Leon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and move toward the East China Sea, potentially making a second landfall over mainland China.

As always, stay tuned to updates and be prepared, especially if you're in Northern Luzon. Typhoon Leon is a force to be reckoned with, so make sure to follow official advisories and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
