Typhoon Leon, the storm that had everyone on edge, is finally showing signs of weakening as it moves northwest past Taiwan’s Orchid Islands. While still a formidable typhoon, it’s lost some strength since this morning, bringing hope that its impact might be a little lighter than initially feared. Here’s the latest on what to expect.

Rainfall & Wind Alerts

Leon’s effects will still be felt across various regions, with heavy rain and gusty winds in the forecast. Wind Signal No. 3 is still in place, meaning parts of northern Luzon could see moderate to significant wind impacts. For coastal areas and those in exposed upland zones, winds will likely pack a punch, especially today, October 31st, and tomorrow, November 1st.

Today: Regions like the Cordillera, CALABARZON, Metro Manila, and parts of the Visayas can expect gusty conditions.
Tomorrow: Strong winds will likely continue in areas like Batanes, Cagayan, and Isabela.

Coastal and Maritime Conditions

Storm surges pose a serious risk over the next 48 hours, especially in Batanes and the Babuyan Islands, where peak tide levels could reach over 3 meters. Meanwhile, those at sea should take extra caution, as waves near Batanes could rise to a towering 8 meters. Mariners are urged to stay in port until conditions improve, with risky conditions even for larger vessels expected across much of Northern Luzon.

Tracking Typhoon Leon

Leon is moving northwestward at around 25 km/h and will likely make landfall along Taiwan’s eastern coast later today. After crossing Taiwan, the storm is expected to head northeastward over the Taiwan Strait and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility either late tonight or early tomorrow morning, November 1st.

While Leon may make a second landfall in mainland China, it’s expected to continue weakening as it interacts with Taiwan’s mountainous terrain. It’s not quite the calm after the storm, but Leon’s decrease in intensity is a welcome development as it moves away from the Philippines.

Stay tuned for more updates—another advisory is expected by 5 PM today to keep everyone informed. For now, if you're in affected areas, be sure to stay indoors and avoid any unnecessary travel, especially near the coast.
