Typhoon Pepito, now rapidly intensifying, is on track to make landfall soon, with dangerous weather conditions expected across the affected areas. Here's what you need to know about this powerful storm and the impact it’s predicted to bring.

Heavy Rain and Wind Alerts in Place

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Weather Advisory No. 37 today, outlining the heavy rainfall forecast. Areas in Pepito’s path, including parts of the Bicol region, Northern Samar, and the eastern coasts of Quezon and Camarines Sur, could experience heavy rains, which may lead to flash floods and landslides. Residents in these regions should prepare for possible disruptions.

Wind warnings have also been raised, with wind signals already affecting parts of Luzon and the Visayas. Areas under Wind Signal No. 2, including parts of Quezon, Camarines Sur, and Sorsogon, could experience moderate to strong winds, while Wind Signal No. 1 areas will see lighter winds. These winds may be even stronger in coastal and upland areas exposed to the storm’s force.

Storm Surge and Coastal Warnings

A serious concern with Pepito’s approach is the potential for life-threatening storm surges along coastal areas. Southeastern Quezon, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, and parts of Sorsogon are at risk of surge heights reaching up to 3 meters, especially over the next 48 hours. Coastal residents should remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders if necessary.

Sea Conditions: Very Rough Seas Ahead

PAGASA also issued a sea condition outlook that warns of rough seas along multiple coastlines, including the eastern seaboards of Eastern Samar, Catanduanes, and parts of Northern Samar. Mariners are urged to stay in port or seek safe harbor, as the seas are dangerous for all types of vessels. The highest waves could reach up to 8 meters, making sea travel extremely risky.

What’s Next for Pepito?

Pepito is forecast to continue intensifying over the next 24 hours, possibly reaching super typhoon status by tomorrow (16 November) evening or early Sunday (17 November). The storm will likely make landfall near Catanduanes, with the possibility of it impacting parts of Camarines Sur, Albay, or Northern Samar.

After making landfall, Pepito is expected to move west-northwest, passing through the Bicol Region, Quezon, and Central Luzon. It will likely weaken slightly after crossing land, but will remain a strong typhoon as it heads towards the West Philippine Sea on Sunday evening or Monday.

Ofel’s Weakening and Additional Concerns

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ofel continues to weaken as it moves over Luzon Strait. While Ofel’s strength is diminishing, it is still contributing to the overall rainfall and storm conditions in some areas.
